“The Impact of Unconscious Bias on Interpreting”, Presented by Corey Axelrod

Workshop Description:
As unconscious biases are created and often reinforced by our environments and experiences, Corey will explore how potential individual and systematic biases impact Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Through Deaf lens, Corey defines ally behaviors and maps out opportunities for interpreters to identify unconscious biases and provide proactive and strategic support that will make a concrete difference in improving the lives of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Educational Objectives:
-Recognize what power and privilege looks and feels like from the perspective of Deaf individuals;
-Understand and apply best practices to determine which privileges to leverage, minimize or divest;
-Apply tips and strategies discussed to hold other interpreters accountable for their actions; and
-Utilize promising approaches for more open and authentic dialogue with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Presenter Bio: Corey Axelrod, MBA, is a passionate social justice advocate and social entrepreneur. As founder and CEO of 2axend, he helps businesses and organizations deliver user-centric experiences for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

“Tax Mistakes All Interpreters Need to Avoid”

Event description: Being a freelance interpreter requires more than just interpreting. Focus is so heavily placed on language and skill that the business side of the profession often falls through the cracks. Through engaging content participants will learn how to avoid the most common tax mistakes that interpreters make. By becoming tax savvy freelancers, interpreters can transform their business practices and improve their current and future careers.

Educational Objectives:
– Participants will be able to calculate taxable income
– Participants will be able to indicate at least 3 differences between 1099 and W2 income
– Participants will be able to state at least 4 business tax deductions
– Participants will learn how to calculate and pay quarterly estimated taxes

Presenter Bio: Rosemary Bocian, MA, EA, NIC, has been an ASL freelance interpreter for 9 years. In 2017 she co-authored the book “The Interpreter’s Quick Guide to Self-Employment” which is currently being used by Interpreter Training Programs nationwide and sold on Amazon as well as at select Barnes & Nobles locations. Following publication, she began teaching workshops across the nation including the 2019 RID National Conference. This inspired her to become an Enrolled Agent and support interpreters directly by providing tax preparation services through her business Quick Guide Tax. Rosemary received both her Bachelor’s in ASL Interpretation and Master’s in Deaf Studies: Culture from Gallaudet University. As a professional tax preparer (EA), author and seasoned speaker, Rosemary presents the complex world of taxes in plain language so that interpreters can thrive in the profession.

 KAI-RID presents Interpreting Skilled Trades Workshop, Saturday, June 29th, 2019, 10:00am-12:00pm at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont, Lawrence, KS. Stay for lunch (included) followed by the KAI-RID Annual Business meeting from 1:00-3:00pm. Workshop worth 0.2 CEUs Professional Studies sponsored by Interpretek. $15 for KAI-RID members, $25 for non-members. The language of this workshop and business meeting will be in ASL.
